Modak Recipe | Ukadiche Modak Recipe | Steamed Modak Recipe with detailed photos. Ukadiche Modak is a traditional Maharashtrian dish mainly prepared in the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, offered to Lord Ganesha. Ukadiche Modak is a favorite food of Lord Ganesha and is made by everyone celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi.
In this steamed sweet dumpling/modak, the outer cover is made by using rice flour and for sweet stuffing fresh coconut- jaggery mixture is used. This dumpling is called Ukadiche Modak in the Maharashtra.
Modak is a famous Maharashtrian food to make for Ganpati Bappa’s Prashad. It has a sweet filling of coconut inside and outer cover made from wheat flour or rice flour or all-purpose flour.

Ingredients
Ingredients for stuffing
1 cup fresh grated coconut, ½ cup grated jaggery, 2 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter), 1 teaspoon poppy seeds (Khaskhas), ½ teaspoon cardamom powder.
Ingredients for dough
1 cup of rice flour, 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter), ¼ teaspoon salt.
How to make Modak Stuffing
1. Heat the pan with 2 teaspoon of ghee. Add 1 teaspoon poppy seeds and cook for a couple of minutes.
2. Add 1 cup grated fresh coconut and mix gently with poppy seeds. Continuously stir on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Now add grated jaggery and stir until jaggery melts completely.
4. Cook the coconut jaggery mixture until it looks a little dry. Don’t overcook it, otherwise, jaggery will become hard. Additionally, add cardamom powder and mix very well. Switch off the flame and keep aside this filling to cooling down.
How to make Dough/ Ukad for Ukadiche Modak
1. Heat the other pan and add 1 cup water along with ¼ teaspoon of salt.
2. Add 1 teaspoon ghee or oil and bring it to boil.
3. When water starts boiling, lower the flame and adds 1 cup rice flour.
4. Continuously stir and mix the rice flour into the water.
5. Now switch off the flame, cover the pan with a lid, and let it rest for 5 to 7 minutes.
6. Transfer the rice dough on the plate. Wet your hand with water and knead the dough while it’s hot.
7. If the dough looks too dry and does not form a softball, add a little water.
8. Knead the dough very well until soft. otherwise, modak will breaks while steaming. The dough is now ready.
Making Ukadiche Modak
1. Pinch a small ball sized dough and roll it on your palm till smooth.
2. Now using both thumbs press the dough ball inside and make a dent.
3. After that, rotate it by pressing its edges and make a bowl shape.
4. The dough bowl should be thick at the bottom and its edges should be thin.
5. Fill the 1 or 1 ½ teaspoon of coconut jaggery filling inside it.
6. Press the edges with your index finger and thumb and make pleats.
7. Make all pleats as shown in the below picture.
8. Now joint all pleats together and close the top part of modak and pinch it.
9. Make all the Modak as per the steps given.
How to steam Ukadiche Modak
1. Grease the steamer plate with ghee or oil and place the modak on it.
2. Add sufficient water in a steamer and place the modak plate in it and make sure to keep space among them.
3. Cover the steamer and steam modak for 10 to 12 minutes.
4. After 10 minutes take out modak from steamer and pour some ghee on it.
5. Finally, Ukadiche Modak are ready, offer them to Lord Ganesha and served as prashad.
Suggestions
1. Grate the coconut very finely. If grated coconut looks too thick, grind it for 1 or 2 round in grinder. Do not make a paste.
2. You can add mawa/ khoya in coconut jaggery mixture, it tastes delicious.
3. Also, you can add dry fruits into the stuffing.
4. Use very fine rice flour.
5. You can use homemade rice flour in this ukadiche modak recipe.
